TAMPA, Fla. — It's an adventure for your taste buds. "Flavor Tripping," an event hosted by the Tampa Jewish Community Centers, invites the public to 81Bay Brewing to try a taste-altering berry known as the miracle berry.
Native to West Africa, the miracle berry contains a type of protein that bonds to your taste receptors, altering the natural flavors of food. Lemons taste sweet, salt and vinegar chips can taste like candy.
Not a fan of sour or hoppy beers? The miracle berry can help.
"IPAs are very bitter," said AJ Alkown, the general manager of 81Bay Brewing, "with this miracle berry your IPAs start to taste sweet, your sours aren’t as tart and it’s kind of a whole new experience with the beer."
"Flavor Tripping" is an initiative of #gather, a social club of sorts for young adults organized by the Tampa Jewish Community Centers.
"It brings people together from across the Tampa area, said Lisa Robbins, the Director of Young Adult Engagement at Tampa JCCs, "just to do something fun and different, and we’re always looking for different experiences."
Tickets start at $7. Miracle berries and food will be provided.
